Biblical Foundations of Healing and Cleanliness. Episode 4 Psalm 104:14

“He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth.”
— Psalm 104:14, KJV

Psalm 104:14 brings us back to one of the themes we've seen throughout our Biblical Foundations of Healing & Cleansing series: God's provision through creation.

The verse shows us an earth designed to produce and provide for both animals and humanity.

“He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle”

The verse begins with God as the source.

The grass doesn't simply appear in the story as a resource. Scripture first points our attention toward the One who causes it to grow.

God provides for His creation through the earth.

“And herb for the service of man”

This is one of the most important parts of the verse.

When the KJV says “herb for the service of man,” we shouldn't automatically interpret “herb” to mean medicine.

Instead, the verse presents plants as something provided for human use and cultivation.

Humanity isn't separated from the resources growing from the earth. We cultivate them, work with them, and receive their provision.

“That he may bring forth food out of the earth”

The verse then gives us its immediate context: food and sustenance.

The earth produces what humanity can cultivate and use for nourishment.

This gives us a simple but important progression:

God causes it to grow.
Humanity cultivates and uses it.
The earth provides.

Using what grows from the earth isn't presented as something separate from God's provision.

It is part of that provision.

The Biblical Foundation

Psalm 104:14 establishes that God created an earth that provides, and Scripture recognizes plants as resources for human use and sustenance.

As we continue throughout Scripture, we'll see natural materials used for different purposes — food, cleansing, anointing, healing, and more.

But Psalm 104:14 brings us back to where those resources ultimately come from.

🌿 God causes it to grow.
