Isaiah 38:21 — Faith, Figs & Physical Care

«“For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaister upon the boil, and he shall recover.”

Isaiah 38:21 gives us one of the clearest examples in our Biblical Foundations of Healing & Cleansing series of something from creation being prepared and applied directly to the body as part of physical care.

Even more importantly, this happens within a story centered on prayer, God's promise, and Hezekiah's recovery.

“Let them take a lump of figs”

The verse begins with a simple preparation: figs.

Rather than being eaten, the figs were prepared for an external use.

We’ll explore the fig itself separately in our Biblical Plant Index. Here, what matters is how Scripture describes it being used.

“Lay it for a plaister upon the boil”

The KJV uses the word “plaister.”

Here, it describes a preparation applied directly over an affected area — similar to what we would call a poultice or dressing.

The figs weren't simply present in the story. They were prepared and intentionally applied to the boil.

“And he shall recover”

Then comes an important phrase:

“And he shall recover.”

The application of the fig preparation is directly followed by an expectation of recovery.

But the larger story gives us another important piece.

Earlier, God tells Hezekiah:

“I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.” — Isaiah 38:5

So within the same account, we see prayer, God's promise of healing, and a physical preparation being used.

One does not have to erase the other.

The Biblical Foundation

Isaiah 38:21 shows us that using something from creation for physical care does not have to stand in opposition to faith in the One who created it.

Hezekiah's story includes faith and prayer alongside practical physical care.

This gives us another important foundation as we continue exploring healing throughout Scripture:

Faith and natural care do not have to compete.
