Genesis 1:29 — God’s Provision Through Creation
“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

Before we explore biblical herbs, oils, cleansing, and natural care, we have to begin at the beginning.
Genesis 1:29.
“I have given you”
God begins with provision.
The plants were not something humanity created. God says, “I have given you.” They were intentionally placed within creation and provided to humanity.
“Every herb bearing seed”
God specifically points to seed-bearing plants.
A seed carries the ability to produce another plant. The plant produces, reproduces, and continues. There is provision built into God's creation.
Genesis 1:29 identifies these plants as food, but as we continue through Scripture, we see plants and natural materials used in other ways — including healing, cleansing, anointing, fragrance, and restoration.
“Every tree”
God's provision wasn't limited to herbs. He also gave humanity trees.
Trees produce fruit and seed and continue the same cycle of provision and reproduction.
“The fruit of a tree yielding seed”
Again, Scripture brings our attention back to seed.
The fruit contains what is needed to continue producing. What God created was designed to provide and continue.
“To you it shall be for meat”
In this passage, God specifically tells humanity that these plants and trees were given for food.
And this distinction matters. Genesis 1:29 doesn't say that every plant was created specifically as medicine. Instead, it establishes something foundational:
God created plants and gave them to humanity as part of His provision.
As we continue through Scripture, we begin to discover the many ways plants appear throughout biblical life — from food and fragrance to cleansing, anointing, healing, and restoration.
